Restaurants, pubs to reopen 4 July

The 2m social distancing rule in England is being reduced to 1m plus, Boris Johnson has announced, adding that restaurants, pubs and hairdressers will be allowed to reopen in the country from 4 July. Cinemas, museums and hotels are also set to reopen from that date – provided appropriate distancing measures are in place – but "close proximity" venues such as indoor gyms and bowling alleys have to remain closed. The Prime Minister also announced that two households will be able to meet up indoors in England from 4 July.

Other points from the announcement:

  • Johnson said: "Where it is possible to keep 2m apart, people should."

  • Wedding ceremonies will be allowed with 30 attendees, "subject to social distancing".

  • Places of worship will be allowed to hold services.

  • The PM added that the changes are all reversible, should coronavirus cases begin to rise.

  • The following can reopen in England from 4 July: hotels, B&Bs, holiday homes, campsites, caravan parks, boarding houses, places of worship, libraries, workplace canteens, bars, pubs, cinemas, museums and galleries, outdoor playgrounds, funfairs, theme parks, amusement arcades, model villages.

  • The following will not be able to reopen: nightclubs, bowling alleys, indoor play areas eg soft play, spas, gyms and fitness centres, tattoo parlours, swimming pools, waterparks and conference centres.

  • See the video below for a discussion on the government's decision to not reopen fitness facilities, swimming pools and gyms.

  • Nicola Sturgeon said that changes to the 2m rule do not apply in Scotland.
